Early April

Grow my pretties!

Happy Friday and Weekend Otherworldlies!

I hope you have all been well!  I have been having a nice time with family and planting seeds upon seeds in my studio.  It is c o l d here but the long days see us upbeat, light and happy.  Finally! Today, we are off on a small weekend adventure to see family and have some *city* time so I thought I would do a quick update before I busy myself watering everyone and packing.

I have had one solid day this week of working outdoors.  Picking up sticks, separating fire burning wood from just bonfire wood, sawing and pulling out a very large plant that had begun to climb up the walls of our house.  Since, the weather has been really rather unpredictable, I busy myself drawing.  I am hoping to start again doing custom art work and hopefully selling my art work this spring.  So, I started drawing from my own dried flowers and my medieval flower Book.  I just wanted to share a couple photos, hope you enjoy 🙂

North Shore of PEI in April, beautiful but really cold.  There were already tourists out as well hoping to see the Teacup Rocks but being deterred by the deep and infinite red mud.

StrawFower – Collected and dried last summer/fall.  I l o v e these flowers and definitely suggest growing them!!  They are really fragile seedlings but grow to be extremely strong plants (the stems are massive).

The cutest dream cottage on the dunes in Northern PEI.  All of the cottages are boarded up to protect them from the strong winds coming off of the ocean.  The road to these cottages is essentially impassable due to the mud but it won’t be long before they are inhabited again!

Current Works!  This Pachyphytum is blooming as well! (Succulent native to Mexico)

Just a couple photos of some recent drawings!  We have so much work to do outdoors as well as indoors (a whole new bathroom).   Knitting is going to really  slow down, however I do have a lot of stock and will begin to update the shop next week! Excited for the future and enjoying having a simple life!

A song for you, the Massachusetts psychedelic rock band Quilt ❤  Perfect for sowing some seeds on a rainy afternoon 🙂

** P.S.  I wanted to just let you all know that living in Rural PEI, we have very bad internet.  I don’t know if there have been changes made but as of late – but it has been next level slow.  I can hardly use instagram (it’s mostly me trying to load when I’m on there) and can rarely see videos or actually anything – I have been having a frustrating morning trying to use it and just felt like sharing that it just hasn’t been working for me lately (I’m wondering if you are seeing my stories? I can’t load videos on there or see anyones and new photos won’t load, blarg!!).  Anywho, for everyone living in rural areas with sad internet, hiya!**

    1. Hi Kaitlin!

Thanks so much for leaving a comment, I love the conversations on here 🙂 I find them a lot more personal and in depth than social media 😛

The wedding planning is non existent, haha. We have so many renovations on our old farm house and have to get a new car this year so we are going to move our wedding to 2019!

Happy Weekend to you as well!! Hope the weather is nice and warm where you are 🙂

  3. Lovely photos and sketches, Julia! I’m weaning myself off social media, but do check in to Instagram occasionally to post something. I have seen some of your stories and posts. I sense that somehow IG tracks how often we are on it – posting, surfing, etc – and that determines the priority of our posts. I notice now that when I do post, many people who follow me don’t see it. This is just my speculative opinion, but I have noticed a difference since I’ve reduced my frequency on IG.

    1. Hi Bonnie!

Weaning off social media is so Wise! I recently read a study about the link between the rise of the stress hormone Cortisol and social media. It said that just a couple days off of social media significantly lowers the levels of the hormone in your body! It’s funny, because I can kind of feel stress rising when I decide to go on and use it (where as blogging,I swear I become calm, etc.). I have been using it more as of late for the stories but still have “offline days” (sometimes involuntarily due to the internet).

And, yes they definitely changed something, I don’t see a lot of posts and I think because I go so many hours not on it there are so many new posts when I do go on that I only scroll through a couple (often they will be from people days before!). Jamie ( he’s a software engineer) said that there is an algorithm which favours people that use it more, so I think your speculation is correct!

Anywho, I tell myself just be true to yourself!

      Hope spring has sprung!

  4. I love your drawings, Julia! I’m hoping to launch some kind of creative business eventually and if I ever do I’ll definitely be asking you to design logo and such for me! That would be a dream. ❤ I hope the weather warms up for you soon so you can get all your seedlings in the ground! Just in general all the best wishes from Orkney. I’ll keep my fingers crossed your internet improves a little so you can actually communicate with us 😆

    1. Hey Emillie!

Thank you so much for all your kind words!! I fear it will be longer now before I can work outside since we are currently snowed over! Eventually these seedlings will get outside though, I can’t wait! 🙂

All the best in your creative venture!! Sounds very exciting and I would happily design a logo for you!
Also, hope you are enjoying your last days living in Orkney, I remember you said you are moving to Inverness I think it was? Sounds very exciting 😀

      1. I’ll keep my fingers crossed for better weather for you. How late does the snow usually stay?
It is only a month now before I finish work here and can get everything and myself moved south. I really am enjoying my last time here and hoping everything will go smoothly with the move!

  5. Thank you for sharing your drawings and glimpses of knitting projects. You are very talented.

I enjoy reading your posts and your quest for a simple life. I live in the mountains and internet connections can be spotty at times. I’m okay with that – it gives me more time to work outside.😊

    1. Hi Debra!

You are very welcome and thank you so much for reading!!

I will be very grateful for the spotty internet when the weather allows for us to be outside! We are in cased in ice and snow right now after a big storm this past Sunday/Monday. It’s hard to believe that I was revelling in working outside just last week! Hopefully the freeze will mean the mosquitoes won’t be as bad this summer!

I hope you are enjoying spring in the Mountains 🙂

  6. Hi Julia!

Your drawings look beautiful. It must be wonderful to ve able to create something like you do. I very often feel frustrated because I have a need to be creative, but no ability to express myself. I have been thinking about making room for a piano. But I would love to learn to draw like you do. I imagine it is so nice to do something like drawing, because you can bring it with you wherever you are. How did you start to learn to draw? 🙂 Also, your seedlings : ❤

I can see your instagram stories, but I am haven't been there a lot lately, so I might have missed some of them because of that. But it is nice to hear your voice 🙂

    1. Hi Camilla!

Thank you so much for your kindness ❤ You most certainly can draw, all you need to do is take some time to sit down and do it! I don't think I ever really learned to draw, I have just done so since I was young enough to hold a pencil and never stopped. I was in art throughout my schooldays, including studio art in university but that was more just an allotted time to draw rather than lessons, etc. You can knit, you can definitely draw, it just takes some patience and not getting frustrated with yourself (sounds familiar doesn't it!). I think that is the biggest part, and not to expect you are going to be Leonardo Da Vinci. But if music is how you'd like to express yourself, a piano sounds wonderful! I find watching seeds grow also kind of fills that creative need even though I'm just a bystander.

I hope your package has arrived by now! Send me a quick message when it does, I feel very much at peace knowing they arrive rather than thinking they are off in postland world, floating aimlessly.

Hope spring has arrived in Norway! We had a snow storm the other day, so the garden gnome I placed outdoors is only visible by the tip of his hat above the snow :\

      1. Thanks Julia. I keep telling myself I should just start drawing, but I never seem to “find” time. Heh! Someday, someday… I did send you a message yesterday because I received it. It’s on IG. And thank you SO much! ❤ We have spring-ish weather today, so – hurray! Hope you'll get to enjoy sunny and warm weather as well very soon. 🙂
